Suffolk County pest control

We are New York's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Suffolk County raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Suffolk County pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Suffolk County Raccoon Control Tip: What Kind of Noises and Sounds Do Raccoons Make When They Live in Your House?
There's nothing more frustrating than lying on your bed to sleep only to start hearing strange sounds coming from your attic. You know there's something there, but what is it? Maybe it's a squirrel! Or maybe it's an opossum! Or maybe it's a raccoon! You're clueless. But more importantly, you lose peace of mind knowing there's a wild animal wreaking havoc up there.

Here's the good news: You don't have to be clueless. Wild animals give distinct sounds, and if you can tell them apart, you can pretty much guess what animal you have lurking around. In this post, we focus our attention on the sounds made by raccoons and what they indicate.

  • Chittering
Chittering sounds are one of the most common vocalizations of these masked bandits. Raccoons use this sound in different contexts. It is the main vocalization adult raccoons use to communicate when interacting with other raccoons, as well as their kits. Kits come running to their mother when she makes a chittering sound.

During mating season, raccoons make lots of chittering sounds. Since raccoons are solitary creatures, female raccoons make chittering sounds to lead on potential mates.

  • Purring
This sound is almost exclusively made by baby raccoons. Whenever a mother raccoon holds, licks, or nudges her pups, they make purring sounds in response to this gesture. The mother then purrs in return as a sign of affection.

  • Hissing and Growling
Raccoons are naturally cool creatures - until they're sick or threatened. A sick or rabid raccoon is widely unpredictable and will hiss or growl at the first sign of a threat. Similarly, a raccoon that feels trapped or cornered will growl ferociously. A growling raccoon will show off its sharp teeth and claws as defensive tactics to scare away the threat.

  • Snarling, Screeching, Screaming, and Squealing
Raccoons are territorial animals and will get into fights to defend their territories. During these fights, raccoons will snarl, screech, scream, and even hiss as a sign of distress. This sound bears a striking resemblance to screeching owls or fighting cats.

  • Barking
Surprised? Most people are when they find out that raccoons bark. When a raccoon is suffering or under stress, it makes this vocalization. If a mother cannot find her kits, she'll bark out of distress.

Noises Made by a Moving Raccoon
If you have a raccoon in your house - probably in your attic, chimney, or crawlspace - several sounds are produced as a byproduct of the raccoon's movement. Some sounds to watch out for include:

  • Rustling
One of the main reasons raccoons live close to humans is because of the proximity to food. These animals have learned to steal food from garbage cans and bins. So if you hear rustling sounds from your trash can, a raccoon might be foraging for food. When raccoons in your attic are tearing up your insulation, you might also hear rustling sounds.

  • Scratching
Raccoons have sharp claws that produce scratching noises when they move into different parts of your house. This noise is more evident when a raccoon is trying to climb down a pipe or up cabinets and counters. You might also hear scratching noises when you have a raccoon within walls.

  • Dragging
It's impossible to imagine how a 15-pound animal can move around your roof or chimney without producing dragging sounds. Dragging sounds are a consequence of a raccoon's heavy weight. So if you hear dragging sounds, you know the wildlife must be heavy, and that makes a raccoon the likely suspect.

Dealing with a Raccoon Infestation
As you can see, raccoons make a whole array of sounds, either directly or as a consequence of their movement. If you observe a combination of these sounds, there's a pretty strong chance that you have a raccoon infestation problem.

Because raccoons are highly destructive creatures, you need to resolve this infestation problem as soon as possible. And the best approach is to get a wildlife removal expert involved. They will carry out a thorough inspection to confirm your suspicion, after which all entry holes will be sealed, and the necessary repairs carried out.
